Ex : I can speak English (présent) I could already read when I was 3! (passé) I will come (futur) Schéma Présent progressif: M+be+ VING (pour une action en cours) Ex : He may be working now, but I’m not sure… Schéma Passé: M+have+VED ou 3ème col. Ex : They might have understood the lesson , but I know it was quite difficult !…
I) La probabilité : Différents degrés sont à retenir… N.B.
II) Les Divers :
Ils expriment différents paliers pour diverses situations… CAN 1) Capacité, pouvoir (présent) : I can swim ! 2) Permission, autorisation : You can go now… 3) Habitude: She can be rude! COULD 1) Capacité au passé: She could swim when she was 4! 2)Demande polie: Could you repeat please!? 3) Suggestion: You could go to the cinema tonight! 4) Reproche: Could you pay attention to what I’m saying!!? CAN’T 1) Incapacité: I can’t speak Chinese! 2) Interdiction: We can’t speak in class during the lesson! COULDN’T 1) Incapacité au passé : I couldn’t get up this morning ! 2) Reproche: Couldn’t they come to school on time!!? N.B.: Pour can et could capacité, équivalent (semi-modal), « to be able to » Pour can et could permission, “to be allowed to” SHOULD 1) Conseil moral: You should stop smoking! 2) Reproche: You shouldn’t do that!!! OUGHT TO 1) Conseil amical: You ought to rest a little!… N.B. : équivalent “You’d (had) better + INF sans to( valable tant pour should que pour ought to) ≠ “I’d like to…”( would) MAY 1) Demande polie ou permission : ( A pupil in class) May I go to the toilets, please ?( teacher) Yes, you may… MAY NOT 1) ce qui n’est pas permis: You may not take photos inside the Museum! MIGHT 1) Demande ultra-polie: Might I open the window, please? 2) Permission au passé( style indirect): Sometimes, when we were little, we might play in class… I asked them if I might go… N.B. : équivalent pour may et might politesse “to be allowed to” MUST 1) Ordre, obligation: You must do your homework! (it’s always like that…) I must go now, I’m late! (I decide to do so…) N.B. : équivalent, “to have to”, plus utilisé en général pour évoquer une obligation de l’extérieur, donnée par qqun, et sur une situation ponctuelle… I have to do my exercice, or the teacher will punish me ! MUSTN’T 1) Interdiction: You mustn’t cross at the green light. N.B. : équivalent “not to be allowed to”/ “it’s forbidden” NEED 1) Besoin, nécéssité de faire qqch : Need, plutôt verbe dans les affirmatives (donc suivi de TO), et plutôt modal dans les négatives (donc sans to), utilisé indifféremment dans les interrogatives ! You need to work hard at school ! (verbe) Do we need to come with you? Need they do that? (modal) You needn’t come tomorrow! N.B. : Au passé, need en tant que verbe suit les schémas de temps habituels. En tant que modal, il passe par le schéma présent ou passé pour exprimer 2 cas différents ! We didn’t need to do our exercice ! (verbe) * You needn’t come tomorrow, there is no school ( vous n’en n’avez pas besoin, et vous n’êtes pas venu!)(modal) *You needn’t have come today, there was no school! (vous n’aviez pas besoin de venir, mais vous êtes venus et c’est dommage !)(modal) N.B. :Il y a un équivalent pour need, « it’s necessary to » NEEDN’T 1) Absence de nécéssité ou d’obligation : You needn’t wait for me ! N.B. : équivalent “you don’t have to” WILL 1) Volonté: stay here for a while, will you? 2) Habitude, prévisibilité: you’ll see! He will sit here for hours, doing nothing! (tu vas voir! Il reste assis à ne rien faire pendant des heures!) WOULD 1)Volonté (forme polie) : Would you please shut the window, it’s cold ! 2) Habitude au passé: he would always watch the TV news before dinner (il regardait toujours) SHALL 1) Suggestion: shall we go to the cinema tonight?! 2) Menace, promesse: You shall see what you shall see! Expression de l’irréel:
a) du présent : If+prétérite+ modal(inf) ex: If I was in N.B.: pour montrer l’improbable, on utilise plutôt « were » ex : If I were on the moon, I could see our beautiful planet and jump high(cela ne se réalisera probablement jamais !)
b) du passé : If+ plu-perfect+modal(have+ed ou 3ème col) ex : If I had known that he was in trouble, I would have helped him of course ! Why didn’t he say anything?! (c’est impossible à rattraper, c’est trop tard!) Date de création : 28/04/2011 @ 21:07 |
